'മോനെ ഇതേതാ രാജ്യം?
'മോനെ ഇതേതാ രാജ്യം?', 'ഈസാ നബി കോട്ടമ്മല് ഇറങ്ങിയിട്ടുണ്ട്'; തുടങ്ങിയ ചോദ്യങ്ങളും പ്രസ്താവനകളുമായി ഒരു മനുഷ്യന് ചെന്നമങ്ങല്ലൂരിന്റെ ചരിത്രത്തിലൂടെ കടന്നു പോയി.. നാറാണത്തുഭ്രാന്തനെപ്പോലെ. അത് മറ്റാരുമല്ല; നമ്മുടെ പരേതനായ അരട്ടുമന്നില് അയമതാക്ക തന്നെ.
പുറത്താക്കപ്പെട്ടവന്റെ വിളിച്ചുപറയലുകളാണു ലോകത്തിന്റെ വെളിപാടുകളായിത്തീരാറുള്ളതെന്നു വിജയന് മാഷ് പറഞ്ഞത് അന്വര്തമാക്കുന്നതായിരുന്നു അരട്ടുമന്നില് അയമതാക്കയുടെ വായില് നിന്ന് വീഴുന്ന ഓരോ വാക്കുകളും.

AMU Off – Campus Centre, Myths and Facts

Now that the high tempo created by various political and community organizations have come down, thanks to the conclusion of elections, it is time for all concerned to ponder over the matter calmly.
At the outset it should be mentioned that the name ‘Aligarh Muslim University’ is in fact a misleading misnomer. It is a central secular institution like other Central Universities, without any special consideration for Muslims or for that matter to any particular community. Sir Syed Ahamed Khan originated the institution (Anglo Mohammedan Oriental College) Aligarh to disseminate modern education among the countrymen in general and backward Muslim community in particular, when it blossomed into a University, it became a Central University in line with Oxford and Cambridge without any special consideration to any community including Muslims. Just as there is a church in Cambridge premises and a temple in BHU premises, there is a mosque in AMU premises. It will be educative to know that Raja Jaikishan of Bhopal, Maharaja Mohinder Singh, Maharaja of Patiala were among the prominent Hindu personalities in the frontline to establish AMU.
Hence an Off Campus centre of AMU coming in the Malabar region of Kerala should be viewed only as an added facility of a Central University for advanced studies and research for Keralites in general, and certainly not as of special significance for the Muslim community. The establishment of AMU Off Campus being projected as an issue of Muslim community interest is meaningless. It needs must be emphasized that there is no special reservation for Muslims per se in AMU except whatever concessions are available in any other Central University. The name Aligarh Muslim University should not mislead people to think that it is a university for Muslims. Similarly the Banaras Hindu University is not for Hindus only. The appellation Muslim and Hindu in these universities’ names is a British legacy.
It will be educative to know that a large majority from Kerala seeking admission in AMU are non Muslims. Even today between 60 to 70% of graduate and postgraduate students in all disciplines including medicine are non Muslims. AMU had been a destination point for Keralites in general who wished to go for higher education, and non Muslims accounted for a majority of such aspirants, due mainly to the fact that (a) though named ‘Muslim’ Univeristy there is no special consideration for Muslims. (b) The number of seats/ facility for graduate and postgraduates studies and for double graduation were plenty in the North, while such facilities were rare in the South. A special attraction in AMU was the facility to pursue two courses at the same time like MA/LLB etc. (c) Most of the Malayalees other than some from erstwhile Travancore, had to head for North for higher studies. The main destination points prior to the eighties were Aligarh, Agra, Lucknow and Banaras in that order. Some of the well known non Muslim Malayalees who constituted AMU Alumni are :
Dr. N. R. Madhava Menon (Chairman Law Academy), Sri. Vakkom Purushothaman (Former Lt. Governor Andaman), Sardar Dr. K M Panicker ( who was a faculty member), Dr. Satish Chandra (Chairman UGC), Dr. Leela Krishnan ( ) Dr. Joseph Vellapalli ( ) Dr. Vellayani Arjunan ( ) Prof. Mathai (Calicut University), Mr. Ashta Murthy (Legal Dept. Galxo), Mr. P K S Pillai ( Research Director Glaxo), Dr. G Gopinath (Ex. Faculty, Ex. VC MG International Hindi University, Wardha). At one stage, most principals of 1st grade colleges in Kerala were non Muslim Aligarians – including Principals of SNDP Colleges Dr. Prasad, Dr. Karunakaran, Dr. Sreenivasan et al.
Incidentally this writer is also an Aligarian, and in the Malayalee Students Association of AMU of which he was President at the time, majority of students happened to be non Muslims.
Of course several Malayalee Muslim candidates also got opportunity for higher learning because of AMU only; but for AMU they would have been left out in the race, due to lack of seats for admission/resources/influence.
To list a few :
(1) Late Dr. V Sayed Mohammed (erstwhile Union Law Minister) (2) Dr. N A Kareem (former V C Kerala University) (3) Late Dr. C K Kareem (4) Prof. K M Bahauddin (former PVC Aligarh, former principal REC), (5) Mr. K. K. Mohammed (Dy. Director, Archeological Survey of India), (6) Dr. K M Abubacker ( former Sr. Scientist BARC, former student and faculty member AMU), (7) Dr. K. K. Usman (Secretary Forum for Faith & Fraternity), (8)Late Dr. Abdul Gafoor (founder President MES), (9) Dr. Ummer Kutty (Vice chancellor Kanur Univeristy.) It is this aspect which has prompted all Muslim organization to fight for the AMU off campus in one voice and this should be analysed and remedied by doing everything possible to get this Central University campus anywhere in Kerala, but preferably in educationally backward Malappuram District in the Malabar region. This is one of the recommendations of the Sachar Committee and Mr. Fathmee had even announced during a reception that it will be in Malappuram district. This has also been included in the Paloli Committee recommendations and accepted by Govt. of Kerala proving there by that the question should be seen as a matter of State interest – interest of all political parties and the student community.
In the above context the reluctance on the part of non-muslim organizations (whose community members from Kerala have benefited more than the Muslims) to join the move for an AMU centre in Kerala is surprising. Now to make things worse, it is unfortunate to see that the Hindu Ikya Vedi is giving the issue a communal colour and projecting it as an instance of Muslim minority appeasement. The anti AMU stand was reported in English and vernacular media. If only these leaders could understand the reality from their friends who benefited from AMU. It would have been worthwhile if organizations like the Hindu Ikya Vedi had consulted one of the renowned members of that community like Sri. N R Madhava Menon (Chairman, Law Academy) who had long experience in AMU as a student, beneficiary, and as a faculty member, before crying foul about that university. In fact, ideally all Keralites should jointly demand for a regional centre of the famous Banaras Hindu University as well (of which the late: Sri A K Kader Kutty, the doyen of Malayalee Industrialists was an illustrious alumnus.)
To sum up the establishment of an off campus centre of AMU in Malabar is in the interests of all Keralites generally as a Central University facility in the State and should be fought for by all Malayalees irrespective of communities and political affiliation rather than by the Muslim community only.
